Battery honored by the Sustainability Institute
Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery has been honored by the Sustainability Institute for its green efforts and initiatives. The Battery received the Private Sector Honoree Award at the Sustainable Community Awards held Wednesday night at the South Carolina Aquarium. The Battery has implemented a wide range of energy saving and environmental initiatives over the past 18 months.

The Charleston Battery ‘green’ changes are highlighted by an 11KW Solar Array that lines the North end of the stadium field. The field itself is now maintained with organic fertilizers and the team switched to an electric mower this past summer.

The stadium concessions have omitted bottled water (instead providing free filtered water in recyclable cups) and switched to recyclable paper products wherever possible; all the discarded cooking oil is collected and converted locally into biodiesel.

In the front office the Battery uses only 100% post-consumer recycled paper for all the team collateral including, Season Ticket brochures, Group Ticket Brochures, Pocket Schedules & Game Programs.

Throughout the facility all light bulbs (where possible) have been replaced with CFLs, and additional light switches have been installed to encourage selective & reduced use of artificial lighting. Office and stadium HVAC equipment has been programmed to power-saving devices and the stadium office is now conditioned with a new geothermal HVAC system. The geothermal HVAC creates an additional energy saving as the excess hot water is diverted into the stadium hot water tank for showers and laundry.

Energy efficient hand dryers and waterless urinals have been installed in the restrooms. Other additions include a tankless water heater, energy efficient beer-coolers, energy-efficient printers and an enhanced recycling program.

The Battery’s premium level of Season Ticket membership, the Three Lions Club now features china and silverware for the pre-game buffet rather than paper plates; to facilitate this, an energy efficient dishwasher was installed prior to the start of the season.

The Charleston Battery players have also contributed, collecting old kit and equipment for reuse while also encouraging local youth soccer groups to donate their gently used equipment. One of the Battery partners in this program is a soccer foundation in Mombasa, Kenya started by Charleston Battery midfielder, David Kenga.

The Battery has furthered it’s efforts by creating a situation of awareness and education for the fan-base. The first annual Go Green Night in May 2008 created awareness for local green businesses and non-profits, the date for Go Green Night 2009 will be set following the completion of the league scheduling process.
